Graduate Trainee – Vacancy

As one of the largest independent accountancy practices in the South Yorkshire area, we are continually looking to strengthen our teams with talented individuals.

We are currently looking for a graduate trainee to join our Graduate Training Program for Summer 2018. Details of the vacancy is as follows:




Job Title:                Graduate Trainee Accountant 

Reports to:            Directly to Managers, ultimately to Partners

Objective:             To ensure that work is carried out accurately, in accordance with the  

                                firm’s standards and procedures, to client’s satisfaction.

Location:                Doncaster 

Working hours:     37.5 per week, worked between Monday to Friday


Smith Craven are looking to recruit a Graduate who is motivated and committed to learning, who seeks to develop a career in Accountancy with the firm.  This opportunity is for a Trainee Accountant in their Doncaster office.

Duties and Responsibilities

First Year:

  • Principally preparing accounts for Smaller Limited Companies, Sole Traders and Partnerships.
  • Preparation of  Taxation Computations (after six months of employment)

Second Year:

  • Work will evolve to engagement with Corporate Businesses, using the experience and knowledge gained in year one, and applying the same principles to larger ‘jobs’.
  • Preparation of Management Accounts
  • Experiencing an Audit inspection alongside the Audit Team

  • Supportive mentoring from an experienced member of staff, to enable the successful candidate to fully understand Accounting processes and what is involved in the preparation of accounts/financial statements.

Skills and Experience Required

The successful candidate should possess the following skills and experience:

  • A degree in Accountancy (preferably), or in a related subject; Maths, Economics, Business or such like.
  • A strong desire to study further to become a qualified Accountant
  • Evidence of team working, along with the ability to use own initiative.
  • Ability to work methodically in a logical manner
  • Possess good attention to detail
  • Ability to priorities workloads and work to deadlines set
  • Good communication skills with the ability to build successful relationships with clients
  • A high level of analytical and numerical problem solving skills
  • Competent in the use of Excel and basic IT software packages
